I would like to start out here by saying that I'm not a huge fan of dogs. I wouldn't say I hate them, but I'm not fond of them, and definitely prefer it if I don't have to touch them. This probably comes mostly from how I was raised, as growing up in my house, only one of the eight people living there liked dogs at all.
Anyway I was riding home from high school one day with a friend of mine named Carson Hill. Carson had a tiny blue truck that he called the Catalyst Ranger. While he loved this truck with all his heart, Catalyst had been having a growing number of problems. The most prominent of which was that when he came to a full stop, the truck would occasionally switch into neutral for a bit, always at the most inconvenient times. Because of this he preferred to stay off the busy roads and was cutting through a neighborhood for this day's drive home.
While we were driving along, Carson spotted a small, apparently lost dog, sitting alone in the grass on the corner of the road. Deciding we should find and return it to it's owners, he parked the truck near the dog.
Carson: We should save that dog.
Me: Why is this our responsibility?
Carson: Because we're good people. Now go get the dog.
Me: I'm sure that dog will be fine. Let's just go home.
Carson: This truck isn't going anywhere without a dog in it.
Me: Fine. You can go get the dog then.
Carson: No. You go grab the dog. I'm driving
Me: We're parked though
Carson: Just go get the dog
So I went out to pick up the dog. It just sat there, staring at me. Studying me. Like an art student would stare at a painting in a museum. I walked over and picked it up. To my surprise, the dog seemed like it didn't even notice anything was happening to it. It just stayed still, completely docile. As I moved to put the dog in the trunk, I hear Carson yell from the cab:
Carson: What's wrong with you?? The dog rides up front!
Me: Why??
Carson: That's way nicer for it! Plus we need to look at it's collar as so we can see who to call.
Me: [Takes the dog up front and moves it onto Carson's lap]
Carson: What're you doing?? I have to drive, I can't have a dog on me. You hold it.
Me: [Too impatient to get home at this point to argue anymore] Fine but you're calling the people.
Carson started the truck up as he called the number on the dog's collar. An answer came quickly and he put it on speaker phone.
Owners: Hello?
Carson: Hey uh, we found your dog.
Owners: What's that?
Carson: Your dog. It ran away but we found it.
Owners: Oh! We didn't even notice it was gone!
Me: [Whispering] Tell them we want a reward.
Carson: Well... We have it.
Owners: Okay, well where are you? We'll come get it.
Me: [Whispering] Tell them we're holding it for ransom and we'll tell them where it is when we get our money.
Carson: We're in a car right now driving, so we'll just drop it off at your place. What's your address?
Owners: Oh okay! Our address is [gives address]
Me: Oh hey! We're close!
Carson: Are we?
Me: Yeah. They're street is that one. We're literally right on the corner.
Carson: Oh cool! Hey do you guys wanna go outside? We'll be on your street in just a sec, and we should see you. We're in a little blue truck.
Owners: Yeah, we're already outside, we'll keep an eye out.
Carson: Cool
So we were almost parked right in the intersection, so we just drove around the corner, and there they were. Right in front of us. We were parked on the side of their house. We hurried and handed the dog out the window, and they walked back inside. Into the house we were parked on the side of. Guys. The dog was in their yard. It was just on the side while they were out front. We straight stole the dog from it's own yard and returned it. Carson started dying of laughter as we drove away and he thought about what just happened.
Carson: We kidnapped that dog!
Me: We should have just left it alone
Carson: We're terrible people!
Me: I told you we could've held it for ransom.
Carson: Yeah. I guess considering we stole it, that' would've been the right thing to do.
